The Forest Hill Huskies are your 2024 Burke County Recreation Department outdoor soccer league ages 11-12 division champions.
It's no doubt the best team I've ever played on. We had eight games and won them all, finishing the season with a forfeit win over New Dimensions on Tuesday night at the R.O. Huffman Center field in Drexel.
Ray Childers played us tough in a couple of 5-0 games, but easily our best games all season were against our crosstown rival, Hillcrest.
We had beaten them the first game, 2-1, and played them again last Tuesday in what turned out was our last on-the-field game. Neither team had scored for the first three quarters, but early in the fourth, Hillcrest caught us sleeping and took a 1-0 lead. We got the tying goal pretty quickly, and the game went to penalty kicks tied 1-1.
In our league, when a game goes to PKs, each team gets three kicks. If the game is still tied after the three PKs, it just ends in a tie.
Well, Hillcrest kicked first and made its first shot, and our first shot got saved by their goalie. They missed their last two shots, though, and we made our last two to get past them by a 2-1 score. It was so exciting. I really thought we were going to lose, but we pulled it out again.
What we've all been looking forward to since the coaches told us about it a few weeks ago was the pizza party we had on Friday at the school. The coaches also said they would give us championship trophies that day too.
I'd say we earned them. We all played hard and shared the ball as a team. We had lots of players score lots of goals, and I got my fourth goal I've ever had playing soccer in one of the games earlier this fall. The whole season was so much fun!
Next up, the holidays and sign-ups for my last season of county indoor soccer in January.
