Rutherford College received a clean bill of financial health this week.
Robert Brown of the Morganton accounting firm Boggs, Crump & Brown presented the Fiscal Year 2023 audit report to Town Council at its regular meeting on Monday evening at Town Hall.
The report praised Town Manager Jessica Bargsley for her attention to procedure and detail and said, “Your town is in excellent financial condition.”
As noted in the report, “The assets of the Town of Rutherford College exceeded its liabilities at the close of the fiscal year by $5,623,123.”
In addition, the report showed, “At the end of the current fiscal year, the unassigned fund balance for the General Fund (basically a cash reserve) was $1,337,803 or 169.4% of the total general fund expenditures for the fiscal year.”
Other than receipt of the audit report and a brief report from Brown, the council faced a light agenda at Monday’s meeting.
Due to the impact of Hurricane Helene on the municipality, Bargsley said penalties for late payment of water and sewer fees will be waived for the month of October and that town staff will contact anyone in danger of having their services cut off to see what the individual circumstances are.
Planning Board Chairman Carroll Hoyle informed the council of four upcoming board vacancies and encouraged Rutherford College residents interested in the town’s growth to apply.
One of those vacancies will occur when Hoyle, who is running unopposed for a seat on the Town Council, takes office in December.
A couple of upcoming events sponsored by the town are the Trail of Treats and the Veterans Fish Fry.
The Trail of Treats, set up around the town greenway, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Veterans Fish Fry will be a drive-through-only event this year and is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, at lunchtime.
