Historic Burke

The formal opening of the Rainbow Grill, at 205 E. Union St. in Morganton, was held Friday, Dec. 3, 1948. Pictured is the six-lane bowling alley that was located in the basement. It was popular with local citizens. The owners and operators were cousins Cecil and Jink Cline, natives of Burke County. They had outgrown the Quonset type building that they had erected two years earlier. The construction of their new building had begun the previous March. The Clines supervised all aspects of the business. The restaurant on the first floor had seventeen booths and four private dining rooms. The History Museum of Burke County and the NC Room (John T. Oxford Jr.’s Walt Greene Collection) provided this image to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.

This holiday season the Burke County Public Library is once again partnering with the community for Project Bumble Tree to benefit the residents of health and rehabilitation centers across Burke County.

To get involved, choose a Bumble from the tree and register at the circulation desk. You will be given a “Bumble Bag” to fill, decorate, and return along with a list of suggested (but not required!) items.
