An investigation into the death of a gunshot victim led to authorities arresting a Black Mountain man for murder.
Around 11:25 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to 5319 Mountain View Blvd. in southern Burke. Deputies were requested after Burke County EMS initially responded to a shooting death.
Once arriving on the scene, deputies found resident Joel Lynn McNabb, 69, with an apparent gunshot wound.
Further investigation pointed to suspect Teddy Justin Rathbone, 34, of 108 Flat Creek Road in Black Mountain. Warrants for Rathbone were issued for murder.
Later that afternoon at around 5:30 p.m., the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office found the suspect and took him into custody.
Rathbone is currently in the Burke County Jail under no bond and first appeared in court on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Other agencies involved were N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and Salem Fire and Rescue.
