The two galleries at Valdese’s Old Rock School are filled with artwork from some of Burke County’s youngest and most promising creative minds.
The Rock School Arts Foundation (RSAF) has provided a variety of exhibitions in Galleries I and II during 2024. Locals and visitors regularly tour the galleries, where artwork typically remains on display for about a month.
This year’s shows have included oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, mixed media displays, photography, and college mannequins, created by local and regional professional artists.
But for the final exhibition of 2024, RSAF is opening the galleries to the county’s future artisans, as it hosts its annual Middle and High School Art Competition and Exhibition.
According to RSAF Executive Director Sharon Bowman, young art students from each Burke County high school and middle school are invited to participate in the competition and exhibition.
The schools’ visual arts teachers may submit 20 2D and/or 3D entries. “If a school has more than one teacher, each teacher will submit 20 entries,” Bowman noted.
She said artwork must be from the current school year.
Jenna Bailey, an artist and art educator from Lenoir, served as judge for this year’s competition. Bailey has taught high school level art in Wilkes and Caldwell counties.
The first-place high school winner receives a $150 gift certificate donated by Blick Art Materials (www.dickblick.com). The second and third place high school winners will receive $100 and $50 gift cards for Blick Art Materials.
Middle school awards will include Blick gift certificates as well. The first-place middle school award will be a $75 certificate, with second and third places receiving $50 and $25 certificates.
Three honorable mention awards for each school level will receive art supplies, provided by the Rock School Arts Foundation.
High school art is on display in Gallery I and Gallery II features works from middle school artists.
The Middle and High School Art Competition and Exhibition opened to the public on Friday, Nov. 15. The artists and their teachers will be honored at a reception on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 4-6 p.m. Awards will be presented at 5:30.
The current exhibition will be on display through Dec. 31.
