18-year-old killed in southern Burke shooting

One person was killed and another injured Tuesday after a shooting on Mount Olive Church Road in Morganton, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded May 19 to 4442 Mount Olive Church Road after a 911 call initially reporting a cardiac arrest. During the call, the caller said someone had been shot. A second caller later reported that multiple people had been shot.
When deputies arrived, they found two victims. One had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and the other had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
EMS responded and pronounced one victim dead at the scene. He was identified as Dawson Timothy Whisenant, 18, of Morganton.
The second victim was identified as Timothy Floyd Whisenant, 47, of Morganton.
The sheriff’s office said it is working with the District Attorney’s Office and that the investigation remains ongoing. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
