Just over 1,800 Burke County registered voters cast ballots Wednesday as early voting winds down before the General Election on Nov. 5.
As of Day 12 of early voting, the total number of cast ballots represents 50.5% of registered voters in Burke County.
Of those who voted Wednesday on one of Burke County's five polling stations, 369 were registered Democrats; 800 Republicans; 688 Unaffiliated; and 19 were Other.
To date, registered Republicans have cast 13,805 votes; Democrats, 5,989; Unaffiliated, 9,884; and 137 votes in the Other category, according to data provided by the Burke County Board of Elections.
The county's election board has recorded 886 absentee ballots as of Wednesday.
Early voting ends Saturday, Nov. 2, in Burke County.
In the 2020 general election, 76.7% (44,759 out of 58,308) of Burke's registered voters went to the polls. Republicans represented 69.5% of that vote, Democrats, 29.4%, and the balance were write-ins.
Turnout is strong across the state. As of Tuesday, 40.7% of North Carolina's 7.8 million registered voters had cast ballots.
“We are in tremendously good shape in terms of turnout, in comparison to where were this time six days out in 2020 and 2016. We are looking very closely at the numbers this afternoon because if we continue to pace where we are, we actually will break the early voting turnout numbers of 2020, either this afternoon or likely tomorrow morning,” said North Carolina Board of Elections Executive Director Karen Brinson Bell.
